Children of Hope
September 8, 2007; 4:30pm
There may be several ways of ensuring failure in a child's life, but one way is certain: remove all hope. Convince kids that their future is bleak and immutable; surround them with drugs, gangs and crime; take away the care and attention of parents; poison their years in school with rumors and innuendo - and kids will fail. On the other hand, protect their optimism, their view of their future, and guard the presence of hope inside of them - and a child is set-up for success.

Lost for Words: Literacy in America
October 23, 2007; 7:00pm
10 million students in America are classified as "poor readers." Many will never catch up, even though their educational career will depend on that single skill more than any other. How does a child's struggle with literacy affect their life? What innovative ways are some parents and schools using to help children improve their reading skills?

Prescription for Trouble
December 2, 2007; 4;30pm
The sub-culture of drug use in America has evolved, and now there is a new threat to our children: medicine, legal drugs sold in every pharmacy and found in every medicine cabinet. Sleeping pills, painkillers, muscle relaxers, ADHD pills and cough medicine have become the drugs of choice. According to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, with the exception of marijuana, young people are more likely to abuse these legal drugs than any other. In fact, nearly one in five teens report using prescription medications to get high and one in ten are using cough medicine to get high.

Warning Signs
January 28, 2008; 7:30pm
Depression, anxiety, thoughts of suicide … many health care professionals argue that these mental health problems afflict more of our children today than ever, and many of these kids are undiagnosed. One study reports nearly a third of teens say they have felt sad or hopeless for at least two weeks in a row. 80 percent more teenage girls are hospitalized for depression, compared to ten years ago. And the CDC reports that one in five teens will consider suicide, and one in ten will make a serious attempt. What are the warning signs of these illnesses? How can parents help? And can kids help each other?

Screen Addicts
April 1, 2008; 7:00pm
Sometimes it seems as if all our kids do is talk on their cell phones, play on their gaming systems, watch YouTube, IM and text each other, hang out in social communities such as FaceBook, and search sites on the Internet. Has screen time taken over our children's lives? what is the value and what are the dangers of all the hours in front of a screen? And how do gambling, gaming and pornography websites harm children?

Disconnect: Why Kids Skip School
May 25, 2008; 4:30pm
Every day in America, about four million children are NOT in school. Many are sick, some have family emergencies, but hundreds of thousands more are skipping class unexcused. In the end, those absences often lead to kids dropping out, greatly diminishing their chances of success in life. What are the key reasons kids choose to "ditch" school? How can parents and teachers help children be more engaged in and committed to their own education?
